Preventing Childhood Lead Poisoning

Is your child at-risk for lead poisoning?

Has your child ever lived in or stayed at a home or day care that is more than 20 years old?

Does your child live in or spend time in a home that is more than 20 years old and being remodeled?

Does your child play or have contact with other children with lead poisoning?

Does your child lick, eat or chew things that are not food like paint chips, dirt, railings, poles, furniture or toys?

Does your child live with someone who:

  • fixes cars?
  • works with scrap metal?
  • spray paints boats, bridges or tunnels?
  • tears down or fixes up old buildings?
  • makes fishing sinkers, bullets or stained glass?
  • refinishes old furniture?
  • uses indoor firing ranges?

Have you or your child ever lived in another country?

If your answer is YES [or don't know] to any of these questions, your child may be at-risk for lead poisoning. Talk to your physician or call your local health department.

Keep your child lead safe

These steps will help protect your child from lead poisoning:

  • Get your child tested for lead poisoning at ages 1 and 2.
  • Wash your hands and your child's hands with soap and water before all meals.
  • Wash your child's pacifier and toys often.
  • If you live in a home built before 1960 - move your child's crib or bed away from window sills and clean painted surfaces like window sills two times a week with hot water and a good household cleanser.
  • If you live in a home built before 1960, call the Lead Hotline at 410-631-3859 or 1-800-370-5323 before you remodel your home.
